Megalomaniac 2006 Sonofabitch Pinot Noir

John Howard started this brand with the belief that good quality Ontario wine did not have to break the bank, his philosophy: no bottle over $25. So far he has proved to be true to his word. This Son of a Bitch has a sweet cherry nose intertwined with cranberry. The taste is earthy, woodsy and spicy with tannins that need some time to settle. Buy now open in a year or two. Price: $24.95...

Harbour Estates 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon

Sweet strawberries mix in with black fruit along with cherry and cassis. This one was aged 6 months in French oak and now has a further year in bottle. It's smoothing out and developing nicely at a very reasonable price ... I had to look twice. Price: $12.95...

Angels Gate 2005 Cabernet-Merlot

This 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Franc and 10% Merlot spent 9 months in mainly French oak, and a whack of time in bottle, which it needed in an effort to smooth out this big bomb. Though still earthy, black fruited and full of wow in the mouth tannins … this big wine from a big year is big on taste – though it needs some time to settle down, it’s still a bit tight. Price: $15.95...

Legends Estates 2006 Malbec

Great price for this first year labour of love product from owner and winemaker Paul Lizak. This wine spent, what seems like an extended 22 months in French oak, but once you taste it you'll see why; this wine really packs a punch. Smooth with black fruit and spicy characteristics, medium alcohol (13%), big taste in the mouth with a bit of heat. Pepper and black cherry take the mid-palate presence while the finish is ripe with peppered-strawberries. Price: $18.95...
