Cave Spring 2005 “La Penna”

They’re not the first, nor will they be the last, but Cave Spring has decided to experiment with some old-world winemaking practices on one of their wines. Winemaker Angelo Pavan was thrilled (so I am told) when they came up with the idea of bringing a little Italy to the winery … namely melding the Amarone-style of winemaking to a Cabernet Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon blend. “La Penna” is 85% Franc, but what makes it special is the 15% Sauvignon that they bring to the blend in a “Passimento”-styl...

Cave Spring 2005 Cabernet Franc Estate Bottled

When I think of Cave Spring I don't usually think Cabernet Franc, instead their name brings to mind their series of luscious Rieslings, but sometimes, a winery can surprise you with what else they make - which is why visiting is always the best way to find out, and taste. From the hot, short 2005 vintage, this Cab Franc is a stunning achievement. The combination of twenty months in a mixture of new French and older Hungarian oak has really brought out an array of flavors and smells. Forefront...

Le Clos Jordanne 2005 Village Reserve Pinot Noir

I've tried this wine at least three times now, and each time I think I’m drinking a different wine - and on at least two of those occasions I had no idea it was even Pinot Noir. The nose has none of that tell-tale earthiness I've come to expect from Pinot ... it's loaded with rich cherry and rhubarb nuances, maybe even some subtle herbs. The taste also has a richness to it, sour cherries dominate, and only on one occasion did the earthy-tannins show up, the other two times there was no earth, ...

Thirty Bench 2005 Benchmark Red

This is a true "reserve" wine in every sense of the word, but name. The juice that goes into this wine comes from the top barrels of the vintage and the final product is in limited quantity (226 cases). The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from the hot 2005 vintage. So far in the 2000's we've had three great to outstanding vintages: 2002, 2005 and 2007 (the vintage and subsequent wines are already being touted as "best ever" by some). '05 was short cropped,...
