Calamus Estate Winery 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon

Calamus continues its run as a winery to be reckoned with. The wines coming out of this small boutique winery, near Balls Falls, are not only tasty, but well-priced - which seems to be a rarity with new wineries opening in Niagara these days. This Cab Sauv is from the good, but short cropped, 2005 vintage, and represents the winery's top eight barrels of this grape variety. After spending twenty months in seasoned oak (ie: one to two year old barrels), the decision to unleash this puppy on th...

Fielding Estate Winery 2005 Meritage (Reserve)

I just knew it was too early to open this one when I popped the cork and a wood stave conked me on the head; but seriously, this is a monster red that needs time to settle. I tried it upon opening, then again 24 hours later, here's what I determined. Right now: woody-cedary notes, very tight nose with green pepper and black licorice ... 24 hours later: beautiful fruit nuances of plum and raspberry. Right now: weighty tannins that fuzzy-up the tongue, a spoonful of cocoa powder and very blac...

Mike Weir Estate Winery 2005 Cabernet Shiraz

Of all our celebrity wine/wineries that we are amassing here in Ontario Mike Weir’s product continues to be heads and tails above the rest. Could it be the formidable winemaking team of Creekside that has something to do with it? You bet. Power and McDonald continue their impressive run of stellar wines for this label. A nose that's fruit driven with lots of pepper and spice. Tannins are front and center, but they don't detract from the black pepper, black fruit, cinnamon or spice that's al...

Jackson-Triggs 2005 Grand Reserve Meritage

Just recently I added the J-T 2002 Meritage onto my Lost and Found blog – I have to admit, I was not surprised that the 02 had aged very well and would continue to do so. Well, I am happy to report that I’ll be doing a Taste it Again Grape Guy in a few years on the ’05, because this one is stuffed with the signs of ageability. We start off on the nose with the dark underbelly of this wine showing through: black cherry, blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate and some cedar-like wood influence. ...

Lailey Vineyard 2005 Cabernet

What’s the recipe for a truly good Cabernet blend, let’s poke through the Lailey cookbook and see: 49% Cabernet Franc, 49% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Merlot (just a dash), let it rest for 1 year in 1 year-old oak and voila. Follow this recipe and you too might have yourself a tasty Cabernet with spicy black fruit nuances, black pepper attributes and hints of cinnamon - and that’s just the nose. In the mouth, you’ll be wowed by the sweet red fruit in the mid-palate, good tannin structure throug...
