EastDell Estates 2004 Reserve Pinot Noir

I find myself being more and more interested in Ontario Pinot Noir, not just because of the renaissance in Pinot Noir, but because there is much talk and hype about the potential of Pinot in Ontario and how is has the markings of being a cornerstone grape for us. It also speaks volumes when we can make Pinot Noir like this East Dell Reserve; it bodes well for our future with this grape. From start to finish this is a beauty. Starting with the classy long neck bottle, which can be a good indic...

Chateau des Charmes 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (St. David’s Bench)

Grown in the clay soils on the winery property, this full-bodied, hearty red currently shows aromas of bell pepper when the cork is first pulled, but give it some time to open up and you’ll get dark fruit smells like blackberries, cassis and oak. In the mouth, there’s even more going on then the (currently closed) nose suggests. Dark cocoa/mocha flavours mix with tobacco, anise and some mild bell pepper. There’s still quite a bit of tannin bite, suggesting that you’ll want to lay this one do...

Chateau des Charmes 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (Paul Bosc Vineyard)

Yet another candidate as a cellar dweller – like his brother (the St. David’s Bench), this wine is also full-bodied and hearty. Grown across the road from the winery, in the Paul Bosc Vineyard, the wine has aromas of deep black fruit like blackberries and cassis along with mocha, vanilla and cinnamon all wrapped in a heavy blanket of oak, which should subside over time to unveil even more flavours to the nose; but at this time you will find the wine still remains fairly closed. Swirl it aroun...

Flat Rock Cellars 2004 Gravity Pinot Noir

Flat Rock currently has 2 Pinots and between the two, this is my favourite (3 more clone specific ones are due out later this year). The Gravity Pinot Noir is a vibrant full bodied Pinot made from the best barrels of that particular vintage year; smells of earth, oak cedar, licorice, dark cherries and strawberries. A wine that definitely has cellaring potential over the next 3 to 5-plus years, because it’s still a little closed, but its potential is already starting to poke through. There’s e...

Vineland Estate Winery 2004 Cabernet Franc

I continue to be big fan of Ontario Cabernet Franc, I really do believe it is our grape to do great things with (more on that in an upcoming article). Historically, Franc has been an old world blending grape for many years, taking a backseat to its much more famous son, Cabernet Sauvignon (Cab Sauv is a cross between Cab Franc and Sauvignon Blanc) … here is yet another prime example of how we here in Ontario can make great straight Franc. There’s some typical herbaceous aromas here like bell p...
