Vineland Estates 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (Non-VQA)

The bottle says “red fruit” but I picked up plenty of dark fruit aromas like plums, along with some cocoa, anise, and vanilla. On the palate, it’s light and fruity, suggesting the Chilean influence, with a slight tannic bite at the end. Vanilla, anise and some eucalyptus round out the flavours in the mouth. Quite a nice quaffing wine from Vineland – making something decent from a weak year....

Stonechurch Vineyards 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon

When you think of Cabernet Sauvignon you probably think full bodied, ageability and on the tannic side (especially when young). Well, with this 2004 version, Stonechurch has made a light to medium-bodied version (probably due to the growing condition of that year in Ontario). Starting with the nose there’s red pepper, white pepper and black currants. The white pepper continues through on the palate with sweet black cherries and a dry, medium-lengthed finish. It’s easy going and ready to drin...

Stonechurch Vineyard 2004 Reserve Pinot Noir

Of all the wines I’ve tasted at Stonechurch, this was my favourite … some would say it’s because I have expensive taste (as it was the most expensive of the wines tasted) – but I’d say it’s because it’s just that good. At first, this wine had a strong strawberry smell, then with a little aeration out came raspberries, cherries and some earthiness – all typical for Pinot Noir. In the mouth, it was smooth and easy … flavours of plum, cinnamon, vanilla and cedar – delicious. Everything just seem...

Peninsula Ridge Estate Winery 2002 Merlot

As winner of the best Ontario Merlot at this year’s Cuvee awards, this had to be a “must try” for us here at OntarioWineReview. So down to the winery we went and “zut alors” it was sold out – but we were told the LCBO had a few left, if you looked hard enough. Let that be your first clue that this is not only a good wine, but one that is flying off the shelves. Smells of peppers, cherries and smoke with hints of leather greet the nose, while white pepper, red fruit and cedar appear on the pal...

Stonechurch Vineyards 2004 Cabernet-Merlot Proprietors Reserve - non-VQA

A blend of Ontario grapes (Cabernet Franc 30%) and Washington State grapes (Cab Sauv 35% and Merlot 35%); this non-VQA blend has great cherries and blackberries on the nose, but it’s the taste that really stands out. There’s a sweet mouth entry of cherry, red licorice and vanilla, followed by a dry finish where blackberries and cassis take over just before you swallow. Definitely a wonderful easy drinking quaffer that goes great on it’s own or with anything off the BBQ. And come the fall, it’...
