Cornerstone Estate 2002 Cabernet Franc

Proving two adages with this wine: 1) 2002 was a great vintage and wine made in that year would age extremely well, and 2) anybody could make wine that year. First time winery owner Jerry Kopanski also fell into winemaking for the very first time. Thankfully, with a little help from his friend Daniel Lenko, he was able to salvage his unpurchased crop. Now, 6 years later, this 8 month aged in American oak Franc displays aromas that are smoky, with sour cherry and cranberry on the nose … black...

Angels Gate Winery 2004 Angels III

Sometimes from a tough vintage good wines emerge. It’s those Vintages that separate the men from the boys – or in this case it, the lady from the boys. This Meritage blend (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc) was made by now departed winemaker Natalie Spytkowski (currently with Rosewood) … but it shows why she is a winemaker in demand. 2004 wasn’t the greatest of years in Ontario, but Natalie coaxed a very approachable yet age worthy wine, of some complexity, out of the grapes she got...

Pelee Island 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon

Part of what Pelee calls their “Vinedressers” series – this reserve wine usually outperforms its price point. Dark fruit based with a smooth tannin profile, touch of cinnamon and rich berry flavours – both red and black. This one’s built for taste not for longevity, very approachable now and over the next 5 years at the most. Price: $24.95...

Hillebrand 2006 Trius Red

The Trius line of wines from Hillebrand continue to outperform their price point. Their single varietal (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) deliver real value at $14.95 and are usually age-worthy for about 5-6 years (sometimes more). The red, a blend of all three grapes listed above, has a longer cellar life and still remains great value at under $20. This ’06 version has raspberry, strawberry and cinnamon smells, while in the mouth you’ll find light tannins, red and black fruit w...

Henry of Pelham 2007 Gamay

No sooner have I reviewed the 2006 version of the Henry of Pelham Gamay that the 2007 hits the shelves. Pelham continues to impress with their Gamay, a much under-rated grape. This is not the Beaujolais-style you think about when you hear Gamay Noir, this one has a backbone that is straight up strawberry, black cherry with a bit of bite. Price: $14.95...
