Riverview Cellars 2006 Riesling

There seems to be two schools of thought in the Riesling world, or should I say two schools of smell and taste: those who like petrol and those who don’t. Those who like petrol, enjoy Rieslings with some age on them, because it is with age that the wine develops that smell; those who don’t, prefer something younger and more on the peachy-lemony side with a fresher taste. Enter the Riverview Riesling from 2006 … young yes, with peach on the nose, but there’s also a hint of that petrol – odd fo...

Riverview Cellars 2006 Gewürztraminer

Those who enjoy rose petal laden Gewurzt will find themselves flocking to this one. The nose is almost exclusively rose petals and floral notes, while the taste is refreshingly dry, crisp and light with some rosiness in the mouth … like to drink your flowers in bloom? Drink up, this ones for you. A Gold Medal winner at the All Canadians Wine Championships in 2007. Price: $18.95...

Smith and Wilson Estate Wines 2006 Pinot Gris

They may be one of the new kids on the block, but Smith and Wilson are putting out some wonderfully fruity wines that could just put them on the map as a “Worth the Drive” kinda place. It’ll take you about 30 minutes from Leamington along highway 3, a pretty “costal” drive, and when you arrive at S&W there’s enough stuff to try to make the trip worthwhile. While there, be sure to tip your head back with a taste of this Pinot Gris in your glass – honey, apple, a hint of lemon and some melon (ca...

Reif Estate Winery 2006 Chenin Blanc

Winner of the 2007 Ontario Wine Award gold medal for dry white – this Chenin is a gulpable wine for drinking anytime. In the mouth, it’s lively with plenty of apple and pear freshness and a touch of citrus undertones. It’s crisp yet soft with a short finish – which means you keep coming back to the well for more, and isn’t that what a good wine is all about? Price: $18.95...

Colchester Ridge 2006 Chardonnay

I was very pleased to see this little winery from the Lake Erie North Shore take gold at this year’s Ontario Wine Awards for their Chardonnay. The smells are pretty simplistic, dominated by apples and lemons; but in the mouth is where we find its complex side: good green apple tang and a peach-lemon finish. What really makes this wine a winner is that it’s refreshingly crisp and clean … just lovely, as the unoaked flavour play and dance on your tongue; fresh and lively is the best way to desc...
