Lailey Vineyard 2006 Niagara River Chardonnay

Derek Barnett, winemaker for Lailey, made a name for himself making Chardonnay for a little known winery (at the time) called Southbrook. Today, after about 17 years experience and plenty of creative, diverse and excellent Chards under his belt he still relishes making his oaked Chardonnays. They offer up such pleasure for the palate and, for those with some patience, cellar-worthiness. This ’06 version made from 100% of the estates “older vines” (planted between 1978 and 1982) has an amazing...

Lailey Vineyard 2007 Unoaked Chardonnay

I’ve heard it said, on more than one occasion, that Unoaked Chardonnay is boring – the winemaker can’t manipulate it like he does with an oaked version. That’s why lees is beginning to play a bigger role in the making of this kind of wine. Lees are those dead yeast cells which are allowed to drop to the bottom of the tank where they lie around adding more complexity to the wine. Some choose to stir these around, thus adding further depth of flavour and aromas to the wine. Lailey’s version re...

Kacaba 2006 Sur Lie Horizon Series Chardonnay

Looking for big oak taste without the use of oak, well you’ve found it. Kacaba brings out lots of fun sweet flavours in this dry sipping Chardonnay while the resting on lees adds more depth and complexity to the wine – giving barrel flavours without the use of oak. The nose has plenty of vanilla and caramel, which are wrapped around overripe banana nuances. The taste brings buttery-toffee onto the tongue, with unripe tropical fruit, wrapped up in a vanilla blanket. I didn’t find the acidity t...

Malivoire 2007 Chardonnay Musque “Spritz”

This wine was a favourite summer sipper last year – even if I waited till the early fall to crack my bottle; but what a deliciously fruity number with lots of apples and peaches on the nose and a dash of perfume. The palate follows suit from the smells, but also offers up a little “spritz” on the tongue, while the flavours linger pleasantly afterwards. The spritz doesn’t last long, but the taste certainly does. This one’s fairly sweet, but you’d never guess it because the fizz and the 9% alco...

Malivoire 2005 Moira Chardonnay

A lot of love and care goes into every bottle of Malivoire wine … sure that sounds very Hallmarky, but what else can you say about a wine that receives weekly lees stirring for 8 months (somehow it reminds of that old Dunkin’ Donuts commercial where the guy wakes up every morning and says “I gotta go make the donuts”) … it’s total length of time in barrel is 12 months; so for ¾ of that time it is ceremoniously stirred to unleash flavours like vanilla, melon and tropical fruits – and that’s just ...
