Henry of Pelham 2006 B. F. Chardonnay

This is quite a bargain wine if you think about it, and one of my favourite Chardonnay’s from Niagara – it’s one that will age gracefully over the next five years, yet tastes great right now. The oaky-butteryness is there, but it isn’t so in-your-face that it’s like chewing on a stave, and the fruit is both on the nose and in the mouth. But what really makes this Chardonnay good is the vanilla-butterscotch finish – ooo boy, just like dessert – but not as sweet, in fact its dry, never thought b...

Henry of Pelham 2006 Gewurztraminer

This Gewurzt probably would have won the Cuvee award for the best Gewurztraminer if not for those pesky folks at Featherstone with their upfront aromatics – this wine has subtler nuances of rose petal and floral and a wonderful taste that brings spiciness into the mix, if you like your Gewurzt in your face, then this might not be for you – but if you like them scaled back and just right, this is your bag … man. Price: $17.95...

Flat Rock Cellars 2006 Unplugged Chardonnay

Some people like their Chardonnay complicated, with lots of tree (read: oak) and other fruit masking flavours – others enjoy something purer and simpler. It’s kinda like Layla: do you like the rocked out, amped up version by Derek and the Dominos or Eric Clapton’s striped down MTV version. For those about to rock, we salute you; but for those who prefer the unplugged, low key version here’s the wine for you – plenty of tree fruit with good acidity and an easy sipping time – not too hard on the...

Vineland Estate 2007 Semi-Dry Riesling

Brian Schmidt is the 6th Beatle! Well I figure if somebody is already claiming 5th Beatle status, Brian should apply for 6th. Brian Schmidt is the winemaker of Vineland and when sampling this wine and later writing this review, I had the song “Fool on the Hill” running through my head, if you’ve been to Vineland you’ll know they reside on and near plenty of hills. (To the tune of Fool on the Hill) “Day after day, alone on his hill … the winemaker of Vineland is sitting perfectly still. And n...

Twenty Twenty-Seven Cellars 2007 Riesling

Winemaker Kevin Panagapka has an idea. It’s not new, nor is it unique, but it does allow him to follow his passion of being a winemaker with his own label. He buys the best quality fruit he can and then, to make his wine, rents some space so that he can save a little money (having your own equipment can be expensive), money he doesn’t have, yet. But if he keeps making wine like this, he’ll soon have a tidy sum and his Twenty Twenty-Seven Cellars will have itself a very reputable name. His gr...
