Thomas and Vaughan 2007 Riesling

I know what you’re thinking, ‘I haven’t heard very much from Thomas and Vaughan lately’ … Well, it seems that while they were under the control of Diamond Estates (Lakeview, Eastdell, Dan Aykroyd) they were very much an after-thought. Now under new ownership, a new winemaking team is in place with a new focus. T & V is readying itself for phoenix-status, rising out of the ashes. Here is their first new offering of note in a long while – made by winemakers Steve Byfield and Arther Harder. Gol...

Ridgepoint Wines 2006 Medium-Dry Riesling

This is one sweet Riesling – I don’t mean sugar-wise, I mean it like the kids mean it; sweet as in good, like when they see you pull up in a Porsche, “that’s one sweet ride”. The smell is subtle, with Mac apples and a hint of floral; but then it’s mouth time. First thing to notice is the great acidity, which is crisp and cool, balancing between the sweet flavours and that bit of bite. Flavours are driven by those Mac apples (bite) and lemon zest (tart), but there’s a sweet core that fights wi...

Peller Estates Private Reserve 2006 Riesling

Peller was the only Canadian winery to pick up a medal (silver) at the prestigious 2008 Riesling du Monde competition … over 500 Rieslings were entered from all over the world, and we all know who rules in that category on the world stage, so to pick up a silver is a pretty big deal. So what does a world silver medal Riesling taste like? Like a very good Riesling - but I suspect you want to know more than that. Well this Riesling is big on minerality, with peach and lime as back up. The tast...

Lailey Vineyard 2007 Riesling

Derek Barnett is at it again. I have been a fan of his Rieslings since his days at Southbrook and all these years later, he’s still producing great Riesling. This 2007 is truly outstanding – everything you drink Riesling for and a whole lot more. When you first get it to your nose, you’ll smell anise and fennel that floats around in and amongst the usual peach, floral and a bit of orangyness. Then you put it to your lips and into the mouth it goes: apples pop, lime zings, white peach coats a...

Hillebrand Winery 2006 Showcase Riesling

You might start to believe that Rieslings in Niagara are a dime a dozen, everyone makes them and it seems they’re all made pretty well – and they’re getting better year-after-year. This is Hillebrand’s top tier Riesling – “showcasing” there best fruit. The nose is more fruit (white peach, citrus and a touch of melon) than the mouth, (good minerality with touches of peach and citrus) – great acidity and a medium length finish makes this one a pleasure to sip on. Price: $25.00...
