Vignoble Rancourt Winery 2004 Noble Blanc

Given the friendly atmosphere of Rancourt Winery, and the way Lionel and Lorraine (owners of the winery) make you feel like an old friend or even family when you walk in the door, I have dedicated each review of their wine to a particular friend or family member … you’ll know who you are. Is the wine made better by the company you keep or does the company you keep make you drink wine? As for what side of the line your friends and family fall on – that’s up to you. This wine is a real winner, ...

Carmela Estates 2005 Terroir Twist

Short crop means there are less grapes to go around, and in this case, Norm Hardie, the winemaker of Carmela Estates, did the only thing he could do … blend. With a limited quantity of grapes in 2005, there wasn’t enough to make single varietals from these grapes (Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling) – so Norm mixed 10% Chardonnay, 17% Pinot Gris and 73% Riesling and came up with Terroir Twist, a delicious sipper that should make the rounds of patios every where come the summer of 2007. However, ...

Lailey Vineyard 2005 Canadian Oak Chardonnay

I am not secretive about my ABC affliction (Anything But Chardonnay) – I have always found Chards to be too something: oaky, buttery, brassy, heavy … and winemakers use a very heavy and intrusive hand when making them. Sure, it’s the world’s favourite white, but I still have trouble getting my lips and tongue around a glass. There are two exceptions to that rule: 1) I am drawn to unoaked versions more than oaked versions, and 2) a good, unique oaked version. Well I can now plunk Lailey Vine...

Ridgepoint Wines 2005 Riesling

So you’ve probably read about the 2005 Medium-dry Riesling from Ridgepoint and are wondering how the two wines compare. This one is drier and has more balancing acidity … that’s the Reader’s Digest version, but let’s dig a little deeper. While the medium-dry was a perfect little sipper on it’s own, the dry Riesling is a perfect pairing with chicken, fish, pork or other light dishes. Both wines have similar smells, but this drier version removes those exotic fruits from its repertoire, choosin...

Ridgepoint Wines 2005 Riesling Medium-Dry

Ever notice how off-dry means slightly sweet and medium-dry also means slightly sweet … seems no matter how you pour it, you’re getting sweetness and sometimes the same level of it. I guess it’s just up to the winery and winemaker to determine the terminology they want to use. This is a medium-dry wine, and yes there’s definitely some sweetness, but it’s so much more complex than that. A nose that at first smells of lemon and lime, but develops more complexity the longer it sits in glass, wit...
