Vineland Estate Winery 2005 Semi-Dry Riesling

The Semi-Dry version tones down the tartness and adds a touch of sweetness to the mix. Still maintaining the citrus nose, but this time it adds in some floral tones. In the mouth, it reminds me of “Dad’s Olde-Fashioned Lemonade sweetened with a touch of honey” with a lingering muted-lime finish. Because of it’s sweetness, this one can be enjoyed as a patio sipper on it’s own, but will also find favour with a light summer dishes. Drink up and enjoy them both. And you can pick them up at your...

Vineland Estate Winery 2005 Dry Riesling

The 2005 version of their Dry-Riesling is pure and simple. Simple: a citrus nose with slight hints of sweet peach – but pure tart and tanginess from first to last sip. In the mouth, the peach from the nose, disappears, giving way to grapefruit on the palate. The acids are still quite high which makes this wine mouth puckeringly tart (give it a few months or even years in bottle to soften), but it goes great with all kinds of light summer fair like salads and white fish....

Stonechurch Vineyards 2004 Gewurztraminer

Looking for a great patio wine, then I might have found one for you … wonderful tropical fruit nose with pineapple, kiwi, peach, apricot, some apple and mild petrol. The taste follows the nose into tropical territory, with a little something extra: peaches, pineapple and some limeade-sweet citrus – but not too heavily sweet. In fact, it has a drier then expected finish – especially when compared to that sweet tropical nose. As the wine warms, it develops characteristics of celery and asparag...

Cox Creek NV Late Harvest Gerwurztraminer

Now here is an interesting idea: take a non-conventional style of wine (Late Harvest Gerwurztraminer), pair it with a not so traditional dinner (Mennonite Meat Pie) and see what happens. Surprisingly good things. With a honey pear nose, hints of melon and a medium short finish, you’d think dinner would be ruined pairing it with this beverage … but not so. This semi-dry (3) wine paired perfectly with the mild spices in the meat pie, in fact it went deliciously well. Bringing out the meat and...

Palatine Hills 2004 Fume Blanc/Chardonnay

Here’s one wine I consider a twofer – you can drink it, or you can play around with it to make something even more special. Let’s start with the drinking part: a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay – yet the Sauv really has the upper hand over the Chard here, with a 73-27 split of the duties. Pouring it into the glass, you’ll first notice a wonderful straw colour. Stick your nose in the glass and you’ll get garden salad smells galore like fresh cucumber, carrots and celery, mixed in with...
