Lakeview Cellars 2005 Kerner

Many years ago, I bought my first bottle of Kerner from Lakeview. It had a bit of residual sweetness with a lovely mouth feel and taste. It also proved to be amazingly popular, especially for a grape variety that people rarely, if ever, hear about. Recently, and for the first time in a long time, I was able to put my hands on a bottle. This time, it was the 2005 Vintage – and I suspect it is going to be as popular as ever. Mangoes, peaches, pears, and honey accost the nose, mixing with a ve...

Featherstone 2004 Off-Dry Riesling

People are going to start thinking I’m obsessed with summer, and who knows, maybe I am - here’s yet another wine I can recommend for summer patio sipping. This off-dry Riesling is more dry than off, with notes of mango, apricot, lychee, pineapple and just a tinge of green apple – and some great floral notes to boot. The taste is a little more reserved including exotic fruit like kiwi and some citrusy-lime. The finish is pleasant and refreshing with just the barest hint of spritz. This 2004 i...

Fielding Estate Winery 2005 Reserve Riesling

This is the big gun – a Riesling that’ll knock your socks off, made from the 27 year old vines of the much-hyped Rosomel Vineyard. It’s literally been 10 minutes since my last sip and I still have the flavours in my mouth – so there’s a long lingering finish that hangs out long after your done. A great nose of apples, apricots with a delicate floral bouquet – you can also pick up hints of sweet citrus. On the taste there’s a lot going on. Imagine biting into a fresh royal gala apple – sweet a...

Fielding Estate Winery 2005 Pinot Gris

Summer sipping doesn’t get any easier than the big three whites from Fielding (Chardonnay Musque, Pinot Gris, Reserve Riesling – all reviews can be found at OntarioWineReview.com in the wine review section). This Pinot Gris can be described as either light pink or pale orange in colour, due to 6 hours of skin contact. Wonderfully aromatic smells of apples, peaches, apricots and floral notes on the nose are followed up on the palate with apples and buckwheat honey … starts off tart but winds up...

Fielding Estate Winery 2005 Chardonnay Musque

Another fine offering in the new 2005 line of whites from Fielding; grapefruit and orange on the nose, with mild floral tones. In the mouth it’s light, fresh and smooth - tastes of pineapple with just a drop of lemon juice and some butterscotch/caramel notes in the back palate, all ending off nicely with a medium finish. Not thick and syrupy in any way, but the wine does seem to coat the mouth for a prolonged enjoyment. Bring on the hot weather, that dock by the water is calling out to me, an...
