Ridgepoint Wines 2004 Vidal

Here’s a wonderful spring/summer sipper that I know you’ll enjoy, from a winery we’ve already visited. Ridgepoint’s 2004 Vidal has sweet macintosh apples on the nose, intermingled with peaches and honey. On the palate, it’s light and refreshing – and not too sweet, but there’s no real tartness to speak of either: fruity with apples and limeade on the tongue. Quite tasty and easy drinking, perfect for the hot weather ahead....

Harbour Estates Winery 2004 Riesling

Pale straw in colour with a luscious nose of apples and pears along with some floral and petrol notes. In the mouth it’s a different story all together – the appley goodness continues but on a more tart scale, like green granny smith – but this wine goes down so pleasant and easy – it’ll be great for sipping come the hot weather of summer....

Colio Wines 2005 Gewurztraminer

For comparison and contrast to the ’02 version, try the newer 2005 version. Heir apparent to master winemaker Carlo Negri, Tim Reilly tried a different yeast strain in this year’s version and ended up with a very different, yet impressive wine. The smells jump from the bottle the moment you pop the cork, and even more aromas are released into the air as you pour it into the glass. Lovely smells of lychee and mandarin orange mingle with peculiar fresh cut grass undertones (which you’d be more ...

Norman Hardie Winery 2005 Riesling

This Riesling is so simple it’s scary, yet so delicious it’s wonderful. The simplicity starts right at the label with it’s single burgundy line that aimlessly makes it’s way around the bottle. The only picture to grace the label is a simple childlike house drawing … simple, clean, modern – which parallels the wine inside. Norm demands high quality Riesling fruit, which he painstakingly nurtures from his home in Prince Edward County – while the fruit itself grows on Niagara’s Beamsville bench ...

Flat Rock Cellars 2005 The Rusty Shed Chardonnay

Harking back to the previous vintage of this wine I would have to say that the 2004 Rusty Shed was my favourite Chardonnay of last year … it was just so unique, not just in name, but in flavours and aromas as well. When you’re at the winery, take a look out the back windows into the heart of the vineyard and you’ll spy the ‘Rusty Shed’ this wine is named after. Now maybe that shed imparts something to these grapes because the 2005 is another strong contender for my Chardonnay of the year. The...
