Huff Estates 2006 Riesling off-dry

A few years back, I tried the Huff 2004 off-dry Riesling and it was one of the first county wines I could say I truly enjoyed, without using the reservation “it’s from the county” or “for a county wine”. The 2005 version was also tasty and followed up on the success of the ’04. Now here comes the ’06, and another winner … Huff’s winemaking team seems to have this wine down pat. The nose is a fun little frolic of pineapple with a light-toasted caramel-peach cobbler; the taste flows through on ...

Henry of Pelham 2006 Sauvignon Blanc

On July 7, 2007 Vintages will be releasing the 2006 Henry of Pelham Sauvignon Blanc (if they already haven’t), this wine is part of the Vintages Essentials Collection. VEC wines are always available in Vintages stores year round, although not necessarily the same vintage year. This is one of Ontario’s liveliest Sauvs, crisp and minerally with lots of grapefruit and grass smells - good enough to rival any from New Zealand. A good zingy stream of acidity runs right down the center of the tongue...

Legends Estates Winery 2006 Semillon

For years, Legends Estates Winery was known solely as a fruit winery – mixing fruit with other grapes (Cherry-Riesling, Apple Chardonnay) creating unique blends that appealed to many wine drinkers and non-wine-drinkers alike. But something has happened over the years and the grape-wine bug has really bitten hard at Legends and they continued to quietly win a few awards for their grape wines along the way … and now comes this. Paul Lizak, owner and winemaker, has created the perfect summer wine...

Hillebrand Winery 2006 Trius White

I’d say it’s about time a Trius White came out. For years now the flagship wine of Hillebrand has been their Trius Red Bordeaux-blend, but until now it has never had a white partner. Darryl Brooker (winemaker) came on board a couple of years back and voila, now we finally have a wine to match up with the red. This is a soft white, meaning it’s meant to drink now, when compared with its red brother, which is meant for the long haul. Made up of primarily Gewurztraminer (33%) and Riesling (30%)...

Flat Rock Cellars 2006 Twisted

The percentage blend changes annually, but the enjoyment factor does not. Each year Flat Rock’s Twisted has been a favourite of visitors – partly due to its reasonable price and partly due to its “yum-factor”. This year the blend goes something like this: 46% Gewurztraminer, 29% Riesling and 25% Chardonnay and each grape adds something to the mix. We get lots of peachy, lychee and rosiness on the nose, with apples, pears and peaches on the taste … perfect for patio-prattle or those down-by-t...
