Pillitteri Sparkling 2004 Sparkling Vidal Icewine

Aside from those houses that focus solely on icewine, Pillitteri devotes the most of its time to the production of icewine (over 50% of their production), that’s more than any other winery. So you knew it was only a matter of time before you saw icewine with bubbles. The nice part about this one is that it has some age on it so it lacks the sickeningly sweet aspect that could have been associated with sparkling icewine – instead you get notes of honeyed dried fruit like peach and pineapple – w...

Konzelmann ‘Old Cellar Door’ Sparkling

Konzelmann makes two sparkling wines: one is light and lovely, full of effervescing bubbles and great as a mimosa mix (or whatever else you want to put into it). The other is for the serious sparkling wine fan … this review is for that wine. A blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling that spends 12 months on lees in the bottle. While you’ll find the nose a little soft and closed the palate more than makes up for it with apples and citrus in the mouth, there is also a hint of peach that s...

Inniskillin 2006 Sparkling Vidal Icewine

For those looking for Icewine with a twist look no further, it’s Icewine with fizz, how much more of a twist does one need. Here we have everything you have grown to love about icewine: apples, pears and honey on the nose; honey soaked peaches and apricots on the palate, and best of all there’s a bit of festive sparkle which has the added bonus of (seemingly) dialing down the sweetness and carrying the flavours in a lighter fashion across the tongue. Price: $69.95 / 375ml...

Colio Wines 2007 Lily Pinot Noir

Another fine little Cuvee Close sparkler from Colio. This time they use Pinot Noir grapes exclusively giving the wine a beautiful pink hue. Winemaker Tim Reilly also rested the wine on its lees for six months to develop the flavour profile he was looking for. On the nose, there is plenty of strawberry, sour cherry and raspberry; while in the mouth, the strawberry and raspberry reappear with a toasty note. The finish is what really sparkles on this one with a palate refreshing lemon and raspb...

Chateau des Charmes 2005 Rosé Sparkling

I have found the perfect wine to usher in 2009. My only problem is getting it and, if I were you, I would start figuring out just how I too was going to put my hands on a few bottles (trust me the scheming has already begun in my head). You see, in 2005, Ontario had a wonderful, if short-cropped, vintage but Chateau des Charmes wanted to commemorate this special and exciting vintage with a very different wine. Since they have been making traditional method sparkling wine for many years, patri...
