Henry of Pelham Cuvee Catharine Brut
Henry of Pelham Cuvee Catharine has long been the pinnacle achievement by which all Ontario sparkling wines are measured against – it’s also the sparkler other wineries aspire to create when they start up their own Sparkling program. Year-in and year-out Henry of Pelham makes this bubbly and every year they get raves for it … and why not, fine long lasting bubbles, great taste, clean finish – what more could you ask for. A more detailed description would include a nose of lemon, lime and pear ...

Colio Estate Wines 2004 Lily Blanc de Noir
I have been noticing a proliferation of sparkling wines around Ontario – it seems to be the new “in” thing. Some wineries have been making them for a long time, while others are just jumping on the bandwagon. Colio falls into the former category … having been making their Lily brand of sparkling since the early ‘90’s: in both a blanc de blanc (Chardonnay) and blanc de noir (Pinot Noir). There is a fairly light pink colouring to this wine, having spent about 6 hours in contact with the skins ...

Maleta Winery 2005 Old Vines Brut Riesling
Winemaker Arthur Harder seems to be everywhere these days … or at least on everybody’s radar. He’s making some fine Riesling for the likes of Calamus, Ridgepoint, Maleta and even had a hand in the Cattail Creek three. But I know from speaking with him, that Sparkling wine is a passion of his. Pairing up with Daniel Pambianchi, owner of Maleta, who shares the same passion, the two decided to produce a sparkling Riesling in the traditional method using the oldest Riesling vines they could find ...

Colio Wines 2004 Lily
Here’s a lovely and versatile sparkler for any time and any occasion. It has a lovely exotic fruit and citrus nose (mainly grapefruit) – the taste is even more interesting with pineapple and orange flavours, and lots and lots of bubbles. Versatile enough to mix with orange juice for that weekend brunch starter “morning glory”; or with grapefruit juice, to cut down on all those bubbles and enhance the aromas; or even to sweeten up your morning cranberry juice, to give it a little pop and fizz. ...

Stoney Ridge Estate Winery 2005 Proprietor’s Reserve Brut Sparkling Wine
I very rarely add a sparkling wine to the website … mainly because there aren’t a heck of a lot of Ontario sparklers out there. That is about to change – I have heard about a few on the horizon from a number of sources. Recently, I got a taste of the newest one to be launched. Stoney Ridge has gone to painstaking detail to make sure their first sparkler followed the Methode Traditionelle (aka Champagnois) exactly … in fact at one point, winemaker Liubomir Popovici called Champagne houses in F...
