Willow Springs 2003 Vidal Icewine - Testa

Beware of cheap icewine … my mother always tells me to avoid the word cheap, so let me try this again … Beware of inexpensive icewine (“that’s better dear”), it’s usually a sign that the wine has turned or is on the verge of turning into vinegar – sweet vinegar, but vinegar none the less. If you drink it soon, you still get icewine sweetness and enjoyment for a fraction of the usual price, though it has a tendency to wilt quickly in the glass. I’m about to give you a tip on the best deal on an...

Vineland Estates 2004 Cabernet Franc Icewine

My favourite Ontario grape (Cabernet Franc) also makes some of my favourite icewines because no matter how sweet they rise on the sugar code they always seem to lack the sticky cloyingness of Vidals. This superb wine has been re-issued by Vineland and is $42 for 200ml, but if you’ve never experienced a Cabernet Franc icewine, it is a taste treat well worth the price of admission. The nose is sweet and lush with strawberries, cherries and raspberries doused in pure chocolate … the taste shies a...

Cattail Creek 2006 Select Late Harvest Vidal

An absolutely delicious wine from one of Niagara’s newest wineries in their inaugural vintage. The nose draws you in with candied fruit like apples, pears, apricots and peaches – but it’s in the mouth where this wine really sells itself. Dried and honeyed fruit: apricots, pineapple, peach, pear; deliciously sweet apple and so much more; you cou...

Tawse Winery 2006 Late Harvest Cabernet

This is an interesting wine for Tawse … originally picked to make an icewine, the sugar levels ended up being too high, and the grapes were slightly botrytis affected. So they bought some extra juice, which they added to bring down the sugar; but that’s against icewine rules, so they made it as this delicious late harvest wine. Now only an 8 or 9 on the sugar code, depending on who you talk to – the smells are unmistakably cherry, and so are the flavours; and wouldn’t you know it, you get choc...
