Henry of Pelham 2007 Cabernet Franc Icewine

Another fine job on one of my favourite styles of icewine, Cabernet Franc. Last year Pelham had a version of this wine that I wanted to “spread on toast”; this year they crank it up another notch. There’s definitely the strawberry jam aspect here, but there is now the added bonus of spice on the palate that brings this wine into the realm of “wow” and “can I have another glass” – which is a rarity with something so sweet. Price: $$39.95 / 200ml...

Sprucewood Shores 2007 Late Harvest Riesling-Traminer Vidal

Another odd combination of grapes, with more intriguing results. Late Harvest usually signifies upped levels of sweetness, but let’s hold off on revealing that until we give up some descriptors. The nose is way too inviting, with a lychee-peachy-pear mix of smells. In the mouth, it’s smooth, yet not syrupy, flavours explode with tropicality and locality: Bosc pears, apricots, peaches in light syrup, lychee fruit and hints of melon. Now, as for your sweetness guess … all who said two (2) wer...

Birchwood Estate 2006 Cabernet Franc Icewine

Soon the Birchwood name will be no more – that’s right any bottle of Birchwood wine you buy will soon be a collector’s item – and there’s no better wine to buy to commerate this winery then this wine here. It should age for a number of years down the road, so that when Birchwood has gone the way of the DoDo and your friends ask you about this bottle of Birchwood, a winery they’ve never heard of, you’ll be able to say: “You know the Dan Aykroyd winery? Well that is where the old Birchwood used...

Chateau des Charmes 2006 Late Harvest Riesling

This wine should be a staple at your house … year after year Chateau des Charmes continues to make this wine, and year after year they continue to impress with just how good it is. I keep waiting for them to falter, but they never do. Once again they bring out the delicate beauty of the Riesling grape’s smells and flavours without getting too sweet and syrupy. The smell of apples and peaches with just a drop of wildflower honey, and that follows all the way onto the palate. Great for dessert...

Cornerstone Estate 2006 Cabernet Franc Icewine

There’s a first time for everything, and for Frank Zeritsch, winemaker at Cornerstone, it was red icewine. Sure he’d made the white stuff before, but red proved a little more challenging – but with this wine he’s shown he’s not only adept at it, but has made it look easy for a first timer, proving that you really can teach an old dog new tricks (Frank is over 70). This is a red berry bowl of fruit, it smells like strawberry and cherry – the palate seems to add an additional element to all that...
