Ice House 2006 Northern Ice Cabernet Sauvignon

This is the second wine I have tried from the Ice House winery in Niagara (a new winery whole sole purpose is the making of icewine) and I have to admit they’re making some damn-fine ones (they’d better considering that’s all they make). The nose is strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate, while in the mouth it’s red fruit dominant (as expected) with tart strawberries fighting it out for flavour supremacy with ripe raspberries … giving the full effect of a red berry jam. Pair with toast (of the ...

Cave Spring 2006 Indian Summer S.L.H. Riesling

As Willy Wonka (the Gene Wilder version anyway) is apt to say “this is scrump-diddly-icious”. This Indian Summer Select Late Harvest Riesling is subtle on sweetness but long on taste. A nose loaded with honey, peach, apricot and lemon is followed up with flavours that make the mouth water (or is that the great acidity?). All those scents turn into flavours in the mouth, along with a touch of lilac and a neat-o spicy quality that dissipates on the finish, and ends with some lemon zest sprinkle...

Stratus 2006 Riesling Icewine

Another delicious Icewine from the assemblage master, J.L. Groux, but this time his blending technique has nothing to do with this wine, it's pure frozen Riesling. A nose loaded with dried pears dipped in caramel, while in the mouth there's pineapple and peach with honey over- and under-tones, there's also a superb tropical fruit feel at its core. Delicious....

Wayne Gretzky Estates 2005 Vidal Icewine

The label on the bottle proclaims “No. 99” – and while I don’t think anybody is about to give this wine that kind of score, it still scores in its own right. It’s icewine, so it’s sweet, and there is no mistaking that it has the pleasant aromas of honey, apricot and mucho dried fruit. The flavours follow suit with good sweetness and the taste of honeyed pears. I found myself taking a few extra sips and swallows just to make sure I liked it, and I did. It’s smooth and goes down a little too e...

Jackson Triggs 1995 Vidal Icewine

During the icewine festival J-T dipped into their cellar to give guests a sample of history … their 1995 Vidal Icewine – now 13 years old. I have heard it said that Vidal Icewine wine has a 10-year shelf life, well J-T just raised the bar on that. The colour was deep amber – I’ve seen Oloroso sherries with less colour … the nose had coffee, caramel and toffee aromas which followed through on the flavours while adding mocha and some over-ripe tropical fruits. Curious of all was the interesting...
