Lailey Vineyard 2006 S. L. H. Riesling
There are 2 ways to make Select Late Harvest wines: 1 way is to use the second pressing of juice from icewine grapes; the 2nd is to actually select a block(s) or row(s) of grapes to be picked later … this is the way that winemaker Derek Barnett makes his late harvest wines. His feeling is that good wine is made as fore-thought, not as an after-thought; and that by choosing his late harvested grapes before hand he makes the best wines possible. If you’ve had opportunity to try this wine, you’l...

The Ice House Northern Ice Vidal 2005
Now here's something fairly unique, a winery devoted 100 percent to the making of icewine ... I say fairly because there is another winery out in Niagara called Royal DeMaria which does the same thing. But the Ice House is a new endeavour started by winemaker Jamie McFarlane, and this, their inaugural offering , is nothing short of fantastic. The nose is exceptional and inviting with peaches, apricot, apple, cinnamon, vanilla and pear all vying for your attention. Now it's time to taste, so l...

Reif Estate Winery 2005 Vidal Icewine
You probably don’t remember the winter of 2005/2006 … but I’ll tell you, our winemakers sure do – and they shudder at what could have been a disaster. 2005 was a great growing season in Niagara, but it is remembered mainly for it’s short crop because of the harsh winter of 2004. That following winter was mild, very mild; mild enough in fact that there was a scare in the air that potentially icewine would not be made because it was the middle of January and we had yet to get the prerequisite te...

Pillitteri 2004 S. L. H. Cabernet Franc
During the Icewine part of the Cab Franc Challenge, the panel had the opportunity to taste 2 wines at two very different ends of both the sweetness and price spectrum … one of those wines was the Pillitteri Select Late Harvest Cabernet Franc made from the second pressing of their icewine grapes. They let these grapes thaw out a little until they are no longer able to use them for certifiable VQA-icewine and then press the remaining juice out of them. What you get is a slightly reduced sugar le...

Mountain Road 2002 Cabernet Franc Icewine
Steve Kocsis makes great sweet wines, from botrytis affected Rieslings to Select Late Harvest Vidals and of course, we can’t forget his icewines. This 2002 version is still vibrant and lively 5 years on – and surprisingly dark in colour (I’ll attribute it’s age for the colour, if nothing else), but its age has taken nothing away from either it’s taste or smell. Put the glass up to your nose and you get raspberry compote, not sickeningly sweet smells, more along the lines of inviting and dive r...
