Bachelder wines is headed by the man with one name, “Thomas” … that’s all you need say and everyone knows about whom you are speaking. This year he released the “la Violette” collection on April 2, a stunning array of 12 wines that included four Pinots, four Gamays and four Chardonnays. Now everyone knows about Thomas’ love for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it was on full display during his days at the newly resurrected Le Clos Jordanne (with Thomas back at the helm), the real surprise here is the new focus on Gamay (a kissing cousin to Pinot Noir) a grape once deem “disloyal” by the Duke of Burgundy and banished from the region – it took up residence on the outskirts in what we know as Beaujolais. Thomas is trying to find and define a Niagara Cru with this grape variety and show what different techniques and vineyards can bring to this grape variety.
Having tasted through a majority of the release (I think I missed just one) – these were the wines that truly impressed and that you should put your hands on right away – wines to drink now or to put in your cellar … either way you won’t be disappointed.
