Here’s another of those grape variety’s that’ll make you ask a variety of questions including: what on God’s green earth is a Geisenheim? Very little seems to be published about this grape, both in books or on the internet, but the little bird whispering in my ear tells me it has something to do with the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute (in Germany), Professor Muller-Thergau (after whom there is a grape variety named), and it’s a hybrid white grape variety. This particular Geisenheim has a golden hue with floral aromas along with honey and Granny Smith apples. The palate is not as clear cut, in fact it flows through the mouth in three stages. First, there’s a pleasant, yet bitter-bitey-tartness and spiciness in the front of the mouth; then mid-palate it switches to having some citrus undertones. Finally, it finishes off-dry with floral and dandelion note while the Granny Smith apple comes back into play. A great wine? Probably not; but a very interesting taste sensation and for the price it’s worth trying a bottle with friends to gauge their reaction. For best results serve with strong cheese and enjoy.
