The biggest production in the 2010 Rare Vintage line-up is this Meritage at 400 cases (the rest are 111). The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Merlot at 23% and Cabernet Franc at only 17%. The nose is front loaded with both red and black fruit notes, but it's hard to pick everything that's going on here because although it was bottled in June it's still trying to sort itself out. There's fruit, spice, pepper all waiting to find it's place. And that complication follows on the palate as well ... there's plenty of tertiary flavours (leather, smoke, pepper) but their masking the fruit which seems to be playing a game of peak-a-boo with your palate. This wine is all about potential: hold 2-3 years, dreink over the next decade. Price: $39.95 - Rating: **** 1/2+
