Southbrook 2012 Chardonnay, Poetica

With 15 months in oak and wild fermentation I found myself expecting more from my first sniff and I would have to say I was at first unimpressed by the wine with its dormant nose; but the palate showed this wine’s more expressive side in spades. At first sip it delivers minerality, almond paste, spice and a remarkable seam of acidity with a long, layered and complex finish … subsequent sips brought around orange zest, hints of pith and a firm finish one would be more accustom to finding in a Cab then Chardonnay. A good 7+ years of aging would really round this one out and bring about some interesting flavours.  Price: $42.00 – Rating: ****+
