Do I need to put the word “sparkling” anywhere near the Hinterland name – I would think most who know of them would just assume it was because not only is this winery is one of the premier sparkling producers in Ontario – they are also the only all sparkling wine producer in the province. This 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay left 22 months on lees from a hot vintage (2012) has gobs of fruit, but with bubbles, acidity and balance to spare. Strawberry, raspberry and other red berries fill out both the nose and palate … dosage was low in sweetness to keep the “brut” moniker and 12.5% alcohol shows good picking and grape management regime. For a hot vintage bubble this wine did not suffer from the excessive heat and ripeness, it’s delicate and downright delicious. Price: $37.95 – Rating: ****+
