Chateau des Charmes 2012 Equuleus

In the past Equuleus has been a rugged wine in its youth, but also something very ageable. The ’12 seems to have a little different spin to it: sure it’s still a 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% each Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend, but it’s stunningly approachable earlier … 14 months in 1/3 new French oak has brought about aromas of cassis, blackberry, black raspberry and black pepper – it’s dark but far from the brooding tongue bruiser of the past. Black cherry with hints of vanilla, smoke and a supple/appealing mocha-coffee finish … So, do we give up age-ability for approachability? Time will tell, but I think not – tannins are still very much present and the structure of the wine is built on firm bones. (Drink now – 2025). Price: $40.00 – Rating: **** ½
