A hot vintage blend that leans heavily Merlot (40%) and Petit Verdot (25%) then puts in the Cabernet Franc (17.5%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (17.5%) – usually that would be the other way around. Lots of intriguing elements here, from the 50% new French oak, to the best barrel selection to find those barrels that work best together. Smoky and toasty beginning, but still with lots of dark fruit: blackberry, cassis, black cherry and even some blueberry notes … pepper and vanilla also swing in for added depth along with mocha, coffee bean and tobacco on the finish. Quite a complex wine that definitely has some years ahead of it. Price: $39.95 – Rating: ****
