Big Head 2012 Chenin Blanc
Big Head Wines is Andrzej Lipinski's foray into the world of the virtual winery. He does have a physical location, in the back of Cornerstone winery on Tufford Road in Niagara, but he has no signage, so you've gotta find him out back (around the left). How did this well-travelled winemaker finally start his own label? Well it has to do with this very grape. In 2011 he ended up with an abundance of Chenin Blanc and instead of letting it go to waste he decided to make three barrels for himself ... out of that came Big Head Wines. In 2012 he increased producting, making 400 cases worth, which he fermented in 6-8 year old barrels and 1 one-thousand liter barrel of new French (equaling about 25% of the wine). The result is a wine of immense complexity and pleasure. The nose has pineapple and lemon pith while the palate is tropical with hints of creamy vanilla (just a hint), and lemon-lime zest on the finish. This is a beauty of a wine - and while not the first vintage under his own label I see why Andrzej figure it would be a good grape to start a winery with. Price: $25.00 - Rating: ****+
