During last year's Pinot Affair, held in Niagara, I visited Lailey Vineyard and at one point winemaker Derek Barnett's eyes lit up, he turned to my wife and said, "I have something you've just got to try." With his excitement level I thought he had discovered the cure to the common cold, or at least how to prevent it. He brought back with him a glass of murky, almost milky, liquid, light in colour (so it was going to be a white wine), "It's just finished fermentation but I'm really excited about this," he said. It was his first vintage of Muscat (de Petits Grains) which was planted on the property 4 years ago. When I visited last weekend that same excitement came over his face as he promised my wife something she'd really enjoy: The finished Muscat. The nose and palate are very similar with hints of lanolin and plenty of floral; you'll also pick up peach essence mixed with lavender ... it's very Muscat, which is exactly what it should be. This is an easy summer patio sipper - which we put to the test just 2 days ago, and we were right. Price: $18.00 - Rating: *** 1/2+
