Sweet reds are few and far between in Niagara, I’m not talking icewine or Manechewitz type reds here – I mean “serious” wines that are red with a sugar code above one. This Fontana Dolce is a 3 … a blend of Merlot (50%), Baco Noir (25%) and Cabernet Franc (25%), and is an interesting wine for those who find reds too tannic or too dry for their liking. The nose is an interesting mix of strawberry, cranberry and citrus – the taste is extremely fruity and even better chilled. The sweetness comes from the addition of a small amount of 3rd pressing icewine juice to the mix. The winery also suggests using it to make sangria, not surprising considering the wine has sangria-like flavours already.
