Sandbanks 2008 Riesling
If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, as the old saying goes … while Prince Edward County can grow and make excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, amongst other varietals, they realize that Riesling’s Ontario home lies further west – in Niagara. With the popularity of Riesling as one of those “perfect summer wines” it makes sense to produce one if you can and Catherine Langlois, of Sandbanks makes a real barnburner here. Classified as a “zero” on the sugar scale you’d never believe it once you taste it because of all that sweet fruit flavour, but she has created such a wonderful balance between the fruit and acidity that it livens up your mouth while at the some time quenching it. The nose has Delicious apple, floral, peaches and a slight perfumed aroma. Palate-wise it’s crisp with floral, peach, apple and what seems like a touch of sweetness, but can most likely be attributed to all that fruit driven goodness – and who can forget that wonderfully long finish. Delightful, and a steal for under 15-bucks. Price: $14.95 – Rating: ****½
