Cave Spring 2008 Gewurztraminer Estate
Talk about a wine that delivers miles above its price point. This Gewurztraminer is a stunning example that sells for so little money it’ll make you head spin. The nose has the typical rose petal nuances and perfumed apple notes, but it’s on the palate that the wine truly shines. Spicy and sweet with an apple blossom spiciness, there’s also a fabulous acidity that keeps everything in check – balanced and truly delicious. Winery mainstay Bryan tells me that it was the extended hang time for the grapes that gave this wine that extra zip and zing both on the nose and palate. Best of all, you won’t soon forget that lovely long finish. In my opinion this wine is way too cheap (er, inexpensive) for the quality, and with the run on sales the Cave is experiencing most people are realizing that as well. It is scheduled for release in the LCBO Vintages program before summer (2010) so buy what you can – this one screams “summer sipper”. Prince: $15.95 – Rating: *****
