Flat Rock Cellars 2005 Riesling
I have been trying to get a review out to you about this wine for awhile, but if I don’t act now, and act fast, you’ll all lose out because the last I heard (two weeks ago), 50 cases were left and that was just about the time Wine Access magazine named it best Canadian Riesling at the Canadian Wine Awards, and White Wine of the Year … so as you would expect it is selling pretty fast. So why were such momentous accolades thrust onto this wine? Because it is very good and here’s why: first, when you crack the cap, smells literally sore out of the bottle and accost your nose, and as you pour the wine into your glass those same smells are liberated further – it’s not like you were looking for the smells of peaches, apples and honeyed citrus, you were more interested in pouring yourself a nice glass of white wine to settle down at the end of the day (or at least I was). On the tongue, the wine is smooth and velvety, with apples, peaches, lychee, mango and honey all finished off with a long lingering finish. Wine of the Year, I think it just might live up to that.
