Lailey 2006 Vidal Select Late Harvest
There are two ways to make Late Harvest wine: the first is to use the second pressing of icewine grapes, because the second pressing can no longer be called icewine, and the second pressing usually garners more juice because the grapes have thawed out. The second way, and winemaker Derek Barnett’s preferred method – sorry, scratch that, Barnett’s only method, is to actually plan on picking them late in the season, that way you can get the quality of grapes you want. This wine is stunning, with its apple, pear and floral notes on the nose, followed in the mouth with soft apple, a touch of apricot and a light, sweet lemonade-like finish. The length is good, the taste is great, the price is right … another hit for Lailey’s winemaker Derek Barnett.
