Lailey 2006 Syrah – Canadian Oak
Lailey makes two Syrahs, one aged in a combination of French and American oak and the other in 100% Canadian oak. Winemaker Derek Barnett remains committed to his Canadian oak experiments, experiments that other winemakers believe he should be committed for; but he is achieving excellent results with a variety of grapes aged in Canuck wood (most notably Chardonnay, Cab Franc). Now he has set his sights on Syrah and the Canadian contribution. While the Franco/American barrels give the wine a peppery smoked meat character the Canadian barrel softens the wine, bringing forth more of the strawberry and white pepper qualities of the grape, which leads to a more fruit forward palate of red fruits such as strawberries and raspberries with a dash of herbs and some white pepper. Delicious.
