Hillebrand 2007 Trius Merlot
Talk about slipping in un-noticed, when I asked winemaker Darryl Brooker about this one, he said, “Is it out already?” A little rushed to market, he admitted, to keep the LCBO listing intact (the LCBO has a use it or lose it policy); this 2007 Trius Merlot is stunning and shows what the “best vintage ever” will be producing. Before I go any further, allow me to stress that when I say “rushed” in no means do I mean this wine is half-finished, Darryl did what he wanted with this wine, he just would have preferred a little more bottle age for it; but after 7 months in oak, this one’s ready to go. The nose smells of blackberries and chocolate, with much the same on the palate … simple but very tasty with a long lingering finish and smooth supple tannins. Another steal fo a wine for $14.95 (see the just released 2005 Cabernet Franc) – this will surely win back fans who shunned Merlot due to the Sideways craze, and help give this grape a new fan base in the process. For those interested in seeing what 2007 is all about – this is a good place to start. Price: $14.95
