Ridgepoint 2006 Gewurztraminer
I tested this wine for bottle shock in newsletter #63 – trying it when first bottle (early June 2007), then allowing it some time to rest and popped the cork again, on a new bottle of course, in August 2007. The difference was night and day – what started out as a simple patio sipper in June became complex in August. Floral and rose petal aromas and flavours carried over from June to August, but melon came to life in the interim, along with a touch of peach in the nostrils. Taste continued to be a touch sweet (1) but simple and smooth turned thick and slightly oily in texture on the tongue (not uncommon in Gewurzt) with honeydew melon and orange rind in the finish. The long finish and pleasant taste helps to sweep away spicy food flavours, cleansing the tastebuds and readying it for its next battle with the forces of fire. Or you could chill this baby down and just enjoy it on the patio – two months later, you have that choice.
