Ridgepoint 2005 Riesling Medium-Dry
Ever notice how off-dry means slightly sweet and medium-dry also means slightly sweet … seems no matter how you pour it, you’re getting sweetness and sometimes the same level of it. I guess it’s just up to the winery and winemaker to determine the terminology they want to use. This is a medium-dry wine, and yes there’s definitely some sweetness, but it’s so much more complex than that. A nose that at first smells of lemon and lime, but develops more complexity the longer it sits in glass, with aromas of pineapple, white peach, apple, papaya, lychee and other exotic fruits. Now it’s time for a taste: sweet peach, pear, pineapple, cantaloupe and red delicious apple. The finish is quite apropos (considering the cantaloup flavours), with just a hint of rind tartness (liking biting too far down on your favourite melon), a la cantaloupe or watermelon, but it does linger quite pleasantly in the mouth. The wine even coats the mouth to a point where you can find a taste in every nook and cranny with your tongue long after you’ve swallowed. Sure is one darn good wine. Now let’s check out the dry version.
