Ridgepoint 2004 Merlot
If you’re a fan of Merlot (except Myles who isn’t), you probably don’t drink a lot of young Ontario Merlot, unless you like your Merlot to bite back. Which is why this Merlot from Ridgepoint is so surprising. It lacks the greenness and goes for a more light and lively Chilean-style: ready-to-drink-now and over the next 2 to 3 years. Lots of dark fruit on the nose, like black currants and cherries; and what you get on the nose you’ll get in the mouth, along with a slight drying sensation, without the mouth-puckering so prevalent in many young Ontario Merlots. This is due to the lighter tannins. There is some power on the palate right now, but by the end of BBQ season, that should settle right down to something even more easy drinking … Enjoy now with steak from the barbee; and as a sipper later on in the season.
