Ridgepoint 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon
Whoa Nelly, another ’02 strikes again. This Cab Sauv from Ridgepoint is a double medal winner: a silver at the Ontario Wine Awards (2006) and a gold at the All Canadian Wine Championships (2006); and you can definitely see (or is that taste) why. Now you must realize there is lots of power in this bottle, and the awards are based more on potential then on how it’s showing now. But based on that alone you can see where this wine is going. In barrel for 24 months, the oak influence really shows, but so does the quality of the fruit from the vintage (2002 remember). The first thing to accost your nose is the tannins and oak, but as the wine opens up other aromas start to come through, like nutmeg, dark fruit and vanillin. On the taste there are more flavours, like cassis, blackberry, pepper, cloves, black cherry and some woodsiness, all wrapped in a powerful tannin grip, but once you get passed the heavy mouth-drying tannins there lies a big, bold, robust, steak-worthy red - fantastic and ageable. Give it a number of years in the cellar, or a big piece of meat – any way you slice it this is a great wine.
