Huff Estates 2008 Riesling Off-Dry
While the County is known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay they tip their collective hats to Niagara when it comes to Riesling with the ultimate complement … using Niagara fruit to make their Rieslings. The grapes for this wine were sourced from both Niagara on the Lake (90%) and the Beamsville Bench (10%). Just recently bottled, winemaker Frederic Picard says, “in a year this bottle will be even better – all of my off-dry Rieslings are, they just need that extra bottle time. I wish we could give it to them.” So my recommendation is to buy a few and sit on a couple till next year, if you have the patience cause this one is also tasty right now. The nose is mineral, citrus and honeydew driven. On the palate, there’s that touch of sweetness with a soft green apple finish – not just tartness but with good acid to balance that sweetness; there’s also a beautiful mineral-citrus component to the taste. Lovely. Price: $16.95 – Rating: ****½
