A Cool Climate Chardonnay attendee: I would not consider 2007 a “cool” vintage in the context of the Cool Climate Chardonnay competition … so to make a good Chardonnay was a real balancing act to maintain fruit and acidity; one that performed that trick well was this Henry of Pelham 2007 Barrel fermented edition. Winemaker Ron Giesbrecht has seen everything and anything Ontario’s growing season can throw at a winemaker. He’s been in this position (since 1990) almost as long as Henry’s doors have been open (1988), - so there’s no surprise he knews how to handle Chardonnay in 2007. Only 6 months of oak aging kept the fruit front and centre, namely apple, while still adding in barrel notes such as vanilla and oak. Price: $19.95 – Rating: ****
