Cattail Creek 2008 Off-Dry Riesling
I tried this wine over the weekend and was simply blown away by it for a number of reasons. First, it’s called an off-dry Riesling, which to me usually signifies there is some sweetness to it. Winery owner Roselyn (can’t pronounce the last name so why try and spell it) informed me it was a low 3 … but forget about getting any trace of that, this wine finishes dry. Made from 15 year old, low-cropped vines, the wine has both a great nose, lovely palate and very agreeable price. The smell starts off minerally with peach, delicious apple, pineapple, tropical notes and some definite cantaloupe aromas. Palate-wise there’s the fruit, the mineral, the melon rind (honeydew) but with such good balancing acidity you forget all about the sweetness – or at least your palate does At $15 this is a real steal, it really does have to be tried to be believed. Price: $15.00 – Rating: ****½
