I’ll come right out and admit it, I had never heard of Frontenac Gris, but according to Richard Karlo it’s a new hybrid developed in Minnesota that’s a mutation of the Frontenac Noir grape: it’s extremely winter hardy and is a grape you can’t make a white wine from even if you tried, that’s because the juice comes out an orange colour. Whatever it is, and however Richard had to manipulate the grape (deacidification is a must) I commend him on a job well done. The nose is strawberry-citrus and sweet with cherry aromas. The flavour is just as enticing: sour almost citrus-like strawberry, and a sweet and sour mix on the finish. What a lovely rosé. Price: $16.00 – Rating: ****
