I continue to be impressed with Honsberger Reserve Cabernet Franc, a best barrel (single barrel) aged an extra year (32 months total) than the regular Cabernet Franc … and this year’s winner is a second use barrel. With the finesse-ful year 2015 was winemaker Kelly Mason has crafted a wine full of primary and secondary aromas and flavours: cassis, black raspberry along with oak and spice, smoke and some cherry-tobacco thrown in for good measure – the tannins find a way to be both dusty and silky at the same time (an unusual but amazing feat) … it needs about 2-3 years to fully come into its own. But will be drinking well for a decade or more.
