From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Ontario Hot Vintage Chardonnays (Ontario)

25 Apr 2015

(January 24, 2015) ... Saturday night and the wife is 'selecting' the wines, meaning she is calling the shots as to the variety, I don't think she knows her way around the cellar yet (small mercy) ... So out of the chute first comes this Rockway 2012 Chardonnay, which is probably still as good now as the first time I tried it, plenty of creamy, buttery deliciousness in this wild-ferment version of Chardonnay, there's even a rich fruitiness and creamy caramel on the finish ... This one is still one of my favorites from that year.  Next bottle is the same age and still a lovely piece of business from a hot vintage, Ravine 2012 Chardonnay, has developed a touch of nuttiness, say almond-based with good peach, and apple nuances; comes off a little leaner than the Rockway but still buttery and smooth.  These are still two wonderful bottles full of life and love to give to the palate.

Schroeder Estate 2012 Malbec (Argentina)

24 Apr 2015

(January 22, 2015) ... After rattling through 3 or 4 wines in quick succession I took a break from my Virgin Wine Club wines, but here I am almost a month later going back to that well to taste another.  This one's from Patagonia in Argentina and is made from Argentina's mainstay red grape: Malbec. This one proved to be a big fruity number from start to finish.  The nose was fruit-loaded with blueberry and black cherry, with hints of pepper and mocha backing it up ... Palate was a little more subdued, kicking things off with a gentle spice followed by fine tannins, but above all possessed a gentle smoothness across the palate.  It wasn't all just fruit in the mouth but the finish was a succulent mix of blackberry, cassis, along with some blueberry skin - okay so maybe fruit forward would be a good description here.
