So Romagna decided to sub-divide their region into 14 sub-regions, this was brought to our attention last year and more so this year as they highlighted those sub-regions on the tasting sheet beside each wine. In my opinion, Romagna is on the cusp of a breakthrough ... but I have said that about a number of regions in the past. But the reason I see Romagna ready for a break-through is because it has something special going for it, and the willingness and passion to push it over the finish line - they just need to harness it: they just need the right push, either marketingwise or winemaking wise and this might be the vintage to do it. I also would point out this is the most wines I have scored in one Anteprima and that would suggest that things are getting better on the winemaking side of things.

Having been to the region the past 4 years I have developed certain thoughts on the Sangiovese wines being made there – though a further and more in-depth investigation is required to bring those notions into further focus. Vintage variation is important here and during the tasting you could see the differences, here are a few words about each of the vintages showcased (and from past recollection):

2014 – tough and hard to wrap you head around
2015 – rich fruit and low acidity, it’s a slutty fruit forward vintage
2016 – well rounded fruit and acidity
2017 – nice balance, too early to tell
