(February 16, 2020) … TUSCANY – This year, as in the past I broke down the Chianti Lovers tasting into two sections. First there is the main Chianti Lovers Tasting (you can find it in this link) and then there is this special off-shoot tasting for Tutela Morellino di Scansano – a 37 wine addition, complete with its own booklet, map, etc. wines were comprised of the 2019 and the 2017 Riservas.
Morellino di Scansano was given DOC status in 1978 and was upgraded to DOCG in 2006 – the grape variety should come as no surprise, Sangiovese (85%), which is locally referred to as “Morellino” (from morello meaning “little dark one” – could be in reference to a local horse or a local cherry … the jury is still out on this.)
Scansano is about a 25km area located in the southern part of Tuscany and because of this location can ripen their version of Sangiovese more fully. There are also other terroir differences that relate to soil and climate.
For those who have been following my anteprima notes you’ll know I only score finished wines, but also implement a Good / Better / Best approach to the wines I taste: considering that many of these wines not see the market in which I live (Ontario/Canada), my guide is a recommendation for those if they should ever cross your path or come onto your radar.
