(February 2020) – Tuscany … Seems like it has been forever since I went to this tasting in Florence, Italy – and I do miss the country so much, it is true that absence makes the heart grow fonder; but now let’s look at step one of this tasting and the reason we are all there – to taste the newest vintage of Chianti Classico Gran Seleziones.
This year 198 wineries participated and 480 wines were on display: 214 Chianti Classico, 153 Chianti Classico Riserva and 113 Gran Selezione. Vintages ranged from the 2018 Chianti Classico to a 2007 Riserva. The tasting occurs over the course of two days during the Chianti Classico Anteprima 2020 and is the largest organized tasting of the week.
This year my focus was on the upper tier wines, the Riserva and Gran Selezione, … if you would like to see the results of my Annata tasting they can be found on a separate report linked at the bottom of this post(Riserva is linked there as well). This year I was able to taste 100% of the Gran Selezione … which is not always the case because these wines go quickly on day one.
The current Gran Selezione wines come from the 2017 vintage (11 were on display), but everybody wanted to show off those from the stellar 2016 vintage (60 in all – more than half of the Grans on display) … not to take anything away from the work that went into creating the 2017 wines, but the 2016 showed very well … in fact, my top two wines are both 2016s. 2015 was also a wonderful vintage (over-shadowed by 2016) and the 31 wines up for tasting from that vintage showed more delicacy and elegance while the 2016 showed both power with some backing elegance. IN both vintages the fruit seems to reign supreme and the oak a background player.
The Gran Selezione wines from both the 2016 and 2015 vintage are wines built for the cellar, while a larger number of the 2017s will need to be tasted to fully appreciate where this vintage is going. The 11 wines were not enough of a sampling to truly wrap one’s palate around the vintage and how it takes to the Gran Selezione style
Below is a list of the wines that truly represented, to me, the best of the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG wines I tasted (in alphabetical order by producer / by star rating) – everything rated is a “finished” wine.
